Biography
Artist profile
Marijana Janković is a visual artist from Niš, Serbia. She completed undergraduate and master academic studies in Applied Arts, Graphic Design, at the Faculty of Arts, University of Niš. During her studies she regularly participated in student exhibitions, concluding this period with her final master exhibition in 2014.
Her professional background developed through graphic design, UI/UX and design leadership. That experience in visual communication continues to inform the composition, movement, rhythm and structure of her paintings, while painting has become the space in which she brings those formal instincts into a more intuitive and personal visual language.
From 2025 she renewed and intensified her independent artistic practice, focusing on painting, drawing and experimentation with materials. Her current research extends through nature, space, material, time and memory, with recurring interests in botany, geology, stone and minerals, traces of older cultures, symbolic structures and imaginary spaces.
In 2026 she presented the solo exhibitions Primordium at the Armenian Cultural Center in Niš and Emergentia within the 8th International Fantasy Convention ZmajKon at Niš Cultural Center. The same year she took part in Nikola Tesla Days 2026 at Galerija Nikola Radošević in Belgrade, where Tesla’s Hidden World was exhibited.
Practice
Between reality and imagination
Her painting is guided by intuition. Images often begin as a dialogue between inner visions, subconscious fragments and the colours or forms that seem able to carry them. Dreams, human emotions and the contrast between light and shadow recur throughout the work, creating spaces that move between reality and imagination without settling completely into either.
Working primarily in acrylics, she uses layered surfaces, saturated colour, shifting texture and strong tonal contrasts to build surreal and atmospheric worlds. The image is not intended to close around a single explanation; it remains open enough for viewers to enter with their own associations and stories.
