Cartel
Cartel turns an antelope into the image of a modern power broker. An eyepatch, cigar and heavy gold chain transform the animal into a character built around wealth, dominance and theatrical control. The humour comes from the precision of the transformation: animal instinct and human excess occupy the same figure without either disappearing. Instead of presenting authority as natural, the painting makes it look carefully staged, assembled through costume, pose and symbols of status. The result is an ironic portrait of power and the visual performances through which power often announces itself.
