Magna Electio
Magna Electio uses anthropomorphic satire to place the language of formal portraiture in an absurd, theatrical setting. A Doberman appears in clerical robes beside a cat in a nun’s habit holding a martini glass. The contrast between solemn costume and improbable characters introduces humour while questioning the authority associated with traditional social roles. Richly rendered garments and the landscape visible through the arched background give the scene a classical framework, but the animal protagonists continually disrupt its seriousness. The result is a playful piece of social commentary about power, convention and performance.
